Akagera

As Monday is a holiday - Heroes' day (don't ask me which ones)- we decided to go away for the weekend. Rwanda is not really set up for backpackers so, if you want to travel, you have to do it with class. So here we are, spending a month's salary on a weekend at Akagera, but it's worth it! The Game lodge claims to organise game drives but, when we phoned to find out what the organization actually involved, it turned out you had to bring your own car to do the drive! So we decided to rent a car, but, because the car had to come to Kigali anyway, they would charge us the same whether they brought us here or not. So we've come to Akagera today with our own car and driver, and we've been out in our little personal safari. The guide, provided by the park, was very keen to point out whenever we saw an animal (zebras, jiraffes, antilopes) all the relevant facts, such as "this is an hervivore, because it eats grass" and to find out about the fauna of our countries. She had never heard about bears, and the best comparison she seemed to make any sense of was "like an elephant but with brown hair and without a trunk". And tomorrow more!

Aprovechando que el lunes es festivo - el día de los héroes (no me pregunteis cuáles)- decidimos irnos de fin de semana. Ruanda no está precisamente montado para mochileros y, si quieres viajar, tienes que hacerlo con clase. Así que, aquí estamos, como dos reyes, gastándonos el sueldo de un mes en un fin de semana en Akagera, ¡pero merece la pena! El hotel anuncia en su página web que organiza safaris, pero, cuando llamamos por teléfono para averiguar en qué consistía exactamente esta organización, ¡resultó que te tienes que traer tu propio vehículo! Entonces, decidimos alquilar uno, pero, como cualquier vehículo de alquiler tenía que venir desde Kigali, nos costaba lo mismo nos trajera hasta aquí o no. Así que aquí llegamos hoy a Akagera con nuestro propio 4x4 con chófer incluído y nos fuimos a hacer nuestro pequeño safari personal. La guía, proporcionada por el parque, se mostraba muy interesada en informarnos de los datos más insospechados sobre los animales que encontrábamos (jirafas, cebras, antílopes), del tipo de "y esto es un hervíboro, porque come hierba" y por aprender cosas sobre la fauna de nuestros países. No había oído hablar nunca de osos y, la única comparación que pareció entender un poco fue: "es como un elefante pero con pelo, ¡y sin trompa!" ¡Y mañana más!
