Model lessons

Yesterday I did my second model lesson with P2 (8 year olds). And I´m glad to say it went much better than the first. In my defence, I must say that the first school cheated and put two classes together in one room, resulting in about seventy kids crammed in the space normally allocated for 35. And, in case there was any space left. there were twelve teachers seating at the back!
It was a Maths lesson, geometrical figures. It was supposed to be revision, but the kids didn´t appear to have heard the words "triangle", "square", "circle" and "rectangle" before. Although, funny enough, they did seem to recognise the written words. I suppose this is not surprising when the teacher's version of "square" sounds more like "scare" and "eighty plus sixy isi fourteen".
The students are very highly motivated and it´s very easy to engage them, but being used to very teacher-centred methodologies, it´s nearly impossible to get them to do anything in pairs or groups without the direct supervision of the teacher. It´s just to alien for them. But they are a pleasure to teach. The loved my "secret envelope" and running to the walls to touch the correct shape. I don´t think teachers had the same view on this last activity, though. I think they found it too chaotic for their liking!
Ayer di mi segunda clase modelo en P2 (ocho años). Y me alegra decir que fue bastante mejor que la primera. En mi defensa he de decir que en el primer colegio hicieron trampa y juntaron a dos grupos en un aula, lo que resultó en 70 alumnos amontonados en el espacio normalmente asignado a treinta y cinco. Y, por si fuera poco, ¡doce profesores sentados al fondo!
Era una clase de matemáticas, figuras geométricas (círculo, triángulo, cuadrado y rectángulo). Se suponía que era repaso, pero los alumnos no parecían haber oído las palabras "triangle", "square", "circle" y "rectangle" antes. Aunque, curiosamente, sí que parecían haberlas visto. Me imagino que no es tan sorprendente teniendo en cuenta que la versión del profesor de "square" suena más parecida a "scare" y que "eighty plus sixy isi fourteen".
Los alumnos tienen una gran motivación y es muy fácil conseguir su atención, pero -acostumbrados a una metodología completamente centrada en el profesor- es casi imposible conseguir que hagan algo en parejas o en grupos sin supervisión directa. Les sobrepasa. Pero da gusto darles clase. Les encantó mi "sobre misterioso" y correr a las paredes para tocar la forma apropiada. Aunque creo que los profesores no comparten su opinión sobre esta última actividad... ¡Demasiado caótica para su gusto!
